The Qatar Football Association announced today, Wednesday, the end of its association with Spaniard marques Lopez, the first team coach, and the appointment of his assistant and compatriot Luis Garcia as his successor.
The Qatari Federation published a blog post on its account on the “X” platform, in wich it thanked the Spanish coach “for the great efforts and achievements he achieved during his period of supervising the training of our national team.All the best to you in your career.”
He explained in a brief statement, “It was agreed to appoint the Spaniard, luis Garcia, as the new coach for Annabi, in the 26th Gulf Cup in Kuwait.”
The statement noted, “Garcia, the former coach of Espanyol, expressed his gratitude to Al-Ittihad and the former coach for giving him the opportunity to lead the Qatari team during the Gulf Cup, which will be held during the period from December 21 to January 3.”
Marquez Lopez had been coaching the Qatari national team since December 6, 2023, as a replacement for Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, who was dismissed from his position before that.He led Al-Annabi to win the 2023 Asian Cup,which took place in doha at the beginning of 2024,without losing.
Marquez led the Qatari team in 17 matches, winning 12 of them, drawing two, and losing three matches.
The three defeats of Marquez Lopez were during the third stage of the 2026 World cup qualifiers, which elaborate the position of the Qatari team, which found itself in third place in the first group, three points behind the third UAE, six points behind the second Uzbekistan, and nine points behind the leaders, Iran.
