Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez‘s recent split hasn’t stopped Affleck from giving credit where credit is due.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Affleck offered rare public praise for Lopez’s performance in his latest film, Unstoppable. The biographical sports drama, which Affleck co-produced, features Lopez as Judy Robles, the mother of a wrestler born with one leg.
Describing Unstoppable as "rooted in the passion of incredibly talented artists," Affleck highlighted the dedication of the cast, including Lopez, Billy Goldenberg, Don Cheadle, Jharrel Jerome, and Bobby Cannavale.
"We believed in the right people, and Unstoppable is another example of that," Affleck stated, adding, "Jennifer’s spectacular."
Affleck’s recent comments on Lopez’s performance mark one of his first since she filed for divorce after two years of marriage in August.
Lopez herself recently opened up about embracing being single during a conversation with Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine. "It feels lonely, unfamiliar, scary, sad, and desperate," she admitted.
However, she emphasized the importance of finding happiness within oneself, declaring, "Being in a relationship doesn’t define me. I can’t be looking for happiness in other people. I have to have happiness within myself."
Lopez reflected on past relationships, acknowledging the painful but ultimately valuable lessons she learned. "That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out," she shared, "It almost did. But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘Fuck, that is exactly what I needed. Thank you, god. I’m sorry it took me so long. I’m sorry that you had to do this to me so many times. I should have learned it two or three times ago. I get it. You had to hit me really hard over the head with a fucking sledgehammer. You dropped the house on me. Don’t have to do it again.’”
Time.news Editor: Welcome to Time.news. Today, we’re diving into the world of film and celebrity relationships. We’ve got a unique perspective from Dr. Laura Kinsey, a cultural studies expert who specializes in celebrity dynamics and their impact on the entertainment industry. Dr. Kinsey, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Laura Kinsey: Thank you for having me! It’s great to be here.
Editor: So, let’s jump right in. Ben Affleck recently praised Jennifer Lopez’s performance in his film Unstoppable, despite their recent split. What do you think motivated him to publicly commend her work at this time?
Dr. Kinsey: Well, it’s interesting, isn’t it? Public praise like that suggests a level of professionalism and mutual respect that often gets overshadowed by personal relationships in the public eye. It shows that, despite their separation, Affleck recognizes Lopez’s talent and the collaborative effort they share in their careers. It also might serve to frame their breakup in a more positive light for fans.
Editor: That’s a great point. In your expertise, how do celebrity relationships influence their professional projects, like Affleck and Lopez’s?
Dr. Kinsey: Celebrity relationships often serve as a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can enhance the emotional depth and chemistry in a film, as seen in their past collaborations. On the other hand, personal drama can overshadow their work and affect audience perception. In this case, Affleck’s acknowledgment of Lopez’s role in Unstoppable suggests an attempt to separate their personal and professional lives, which can be crucial for maintaining their brands.
Editor: Indeed, Unstoppable is a significant project for Affleck, who co-produced it. Lopez plays Judy Robles, a character with a powerful story. How do you think her role could resonate with audiences, especially in light of their personal history?
Dr. Kinsey: Lopez’s portrayal of Judy Robles taps into themes of resilience and compassion, which can resonate deeply with audiences. Audiences often connect personal struggles to broader societal issues, such as adversity in sports, which is what this film highlights. Given their tumultuous but passionate relationship history, some viewers might interpret her character as a reflection of her own journey, especially when viewed through the lens of female empowerment and courage.
Editor: That’s a fascinating angle. It seems that films like Unstoppable can also serve as a platform for both artists to assert their identities beyond their personal dramas.
Dr. Kinsey: Absolutely! Films are a powerful medium for storytelling, and in cases like this, they can redefine how we perceive those involved. Affleck’s support for Lopez indicates that they maintain a professional bond that transcends their personal lives. This could ultimately benefit both their careers moving forward, especially if they can align their public images with their artistic endeavors.
Editor: Before we wrap up, do you think public admiration between ex-partners, like what we see here, is common?
Dr. Kinsey: It’s certainly not unheard of. Many celebrities prioritize their professional relationships, showing that they can respect and support one another despite personal circumstances. However, the public aspect adds a layer of complexity since fans and media alike will scrutinize every interaction. If handled gracefully, it can reflect maturity and open the door for performance collaborations in the future.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Kinsey, for your insights! It seems there’s always much more beneath the surface in celebrity relationships, especially when it comes to their work. We appreciate your expertise.
Dr. Kinsey: Thank you for having me! It’s been a pleasure to discuss these dynamics with you.
