The Kremlin announced that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin this evening (Monday), when they said the two had discussed continuing the fighting in Ukraine. This is the fifth time Bennett and Putin have been talking since the start of hostilities in Ukraine three weeks ago, alongside a meeting of the two leaders in Moscow last week.

The conversation took place in parallel with the weekly cabinet meeting, when Bennett left the meeting for the purpose of the conversation – which lasted about an hour and a half. Political sources noted that during the meeting the two discussed the ceasefire efforts between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Israel’s humanitarian aid to the region.

At the same time, the Russian media reported that Bennett had updated Putin on the war talks with leaders from several countries, including French President Emmanuel Macron that Putin shared with the prime minister his assessments of the ongoing talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Shortly afterwards, it was reported that Bennett had also spoken with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky, for the seventh time since the start of hostilities in his country. Zalansky wrote on Twitter that “we have discussed our joint steps against Russian aggression, and have agreed on further actions to be promoted.

As you may recall, last weekend it was reported that Zlanski had made a proposal to Bennett to hold talks between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia in Jerusalem. In a tweet he wrote on Twitter after the call, Zalansky said that “we discussed Russian aggression and the possibilities of holding peace talks. We must stop the attacks on civilians, and as part of that I asked for help in releasing the mayor of Litopol and elected officials held by the Russians.”

In a video posted on his telegram page on Saturday, Zalansky said: “Regarding Prime Minister Bennett – we in principle, and I personally, relate positively to everyone’s help in the negotiations. However, I do not refer to Mr. Bennett as ‘anyone’ because I think he has the ability to play an important role. Because Israel can certainly play such a role (hosting the talks) and especially Jerusalem. I think so, and I told Mr Bennett that. “
