The plenary session of Mexico City Congress approved, with the majority of votes of the ruling party, the appointment of Bertha Alcalde Luján like new Attorney General of Justice capital.
In the process marked by an intense debate, the deputy Alberto Martínez Urinchopresident of the Administration and Justice Procurement Commissionhighlighted the importance of Citizen Judicial Council in preparing the shortlist and stressed that Alcalde Luján was the best evaluated.
“I am sure that the designation will have broad and unobjectionable legitimacy,” said Martínez Urincho, who also highlighted the transparency of the process.

In contrast, the opposition, led by the PAN coordinator Andrés Atayde, expressed concerns about a possible conflict of interest and questioned the autonomy of the new prosecutor.
However, other legislators such as Silvia Sánchez Barrios y Royfid Torres (Citizen Movement) defended the appointment, highlighting the Mayor’s experience and vision.
Bertha Alcalde has a degree in Right for the UNAM and teacher in International Legal Studies for the New York University; Among other positions, she was general director of the ISSSTE and commissioner of Health Operation in Cofepris.
Special Commission for the Election of Judges and Magistrates
In another relevant decision, the CCongress of Mexico City approved the creation of the Special Commission for the Judge Selection Process and Magistrates of the capital’s Judicial Branch in the Extraordinary Election of 2025.
The process will include six stages: preparation of the election, call, nomination of candidates, election day, counting and assignment of positions, and delivery of certificates of validity.

The votes of each parliamentary group will be weighted based on their representation in Congress, ensuring equitable participation.
