2025’s Most Compelling Video Game Releases: A First Look

A surge in innovative game design has defined the past year, offering experiences ranging from intimate co-ops to sprawling, cinematic adventures. PBS News Hour recently featured a discussion with James Mastromarino, NPR’s gaming editor and producer for “Here & Now,” who highlighted several standout titles poised to shape the gaming landscape in 2025. Below are Mastromarino’s selections, categorized by genre.

Narrative-Driven Experiences Redefine Storytelling

The line between interactive entertainment and traditional art forms continues to blur, with several 2025 releases prioritizing compelling narratives. Mastromarino singled out “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” as a particularly striking example. “It’s sort of like what you would get if you cross an existentialist novel with a French New Wave film and made it a video game with fantastical characters and this really lovable cast,” he explained. “It really blew me away. It has so many twists and turns and is really trying to tell something that’s very heartfelt and compelling.”

Another title generating significant buzz is “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.” The game’s creator, Hideo Kojima, has become known for crafting experiences that resemble playable films. According to Mastromarino, this latest installment takes that ambition even further, boasting a cast of Hollywood stars including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, and Elle Fanning. “So that’s a rather ambitious, really far-reaching kind of science fiction game,” he noted.

Collaboration and Connection in Multiplayer Games

For those seeking shared experiences, 2025 offers a diverse range of multiplayer and co-op options. “Split Fiction” stands out for its unique premise: a game designed exclusively for two players, casting them as writers collaborating within a virtual reality space based on their own creations. “You have to have a partner. There’s no way to play it alone,” Mastromarino emphasized. “It’s by a studio that specializes in this sort of thing. It blew a lot of people away.”

The enduring appeal of family-friendly competition is also represented by the latest installment in the “Mario Kart” franchise, “Mario Kart World.” Mastromarino shared a personal anecdote, stating, “As always, Mario Kart’s just a great time for families. I can attest to that. I played a ton over the holidays.”

Puzzle and Strategy Games Offer Intellectual Challenges

Gamers seeking mental stimulation will find plenty to enjoy in the puzzle and strategy categories. “Blue Prince” offers a novel approach to exploration, tasking players with building and uncovering the secrets of a mansion room by room. “That’s like the regal prince, but it’s a pun with the sort of draft plans that you’d have for a house because the way it works is that you explore a mansion, building it room by room and exploring its secrets as you go,” Mastromarino explained.

Finally, “Strange Antiquities” presents a captivating blend of shop management and occult mystery. “And then there’s another one called ‘Strange Antiquities,’ where you run an antiquary shop. And of course there’s some sort of occult malfeasance going on behind the scenes. It’s great. I can’t recommend it enough.”

These selections represent just a fraction of the exciting releases anticipated in 2025, signaling a vibrant and innovative period for the video game industry.
