On the beach, on the train, on Instagram: if you see women with a book in their hand today, they often read “22 Bahnen” or “Wind Force 17”. Since 2023, Caroline Wahl has occupied the top positions of the bestseller lists with the story of the two sisters Tilda and Ida (published by Dumont), who grew up with an alcoholic mother and lived in northern Germany after her death. Caroline Wahl, born in 1995 in Mainz and raised in Schriesheim near Heidelberg, studied German and German literature in Tübingen and Berlin. Like Ida, she feels at home on the coast. He is currently moving from Rostock to Kiel.

What do you eat for breakfast?

Mostly nothing, I just drink black coffee. I’m most productive when I write in the morning. It is better to do this not on a full stomach, but on an empty stomach.

Where do you buy your clothes?

Preferably in the city, preferably in Zadar and Monki. But I’m trying to reduce it because I have a lot of things I don’t wear. The best purchases are the pieces you see in the window and that jump out.

What is the oldest item of clothing in your closet?

A t-shirt my brother bought me once when I was 16. Military pattern and rhinestones. I would never wear it again, but I’m fond of it because it came from my brother.

When was the last time you wrote a letter by hand?

The last real letter I wrote to my mother was on her birthday, August 27th. Otherwise often also postcards.

What book has had the greatest impact on you in your life?

The first book that showed me that literature was truly beautiful and mine was “The Trial” by Franz Kafka. The moment I read the text, I was in that Kafka mood, the dark world and yet the subtle humor. I’m Kafka Ultra.

How do you stay informed about world events?

Definitely not on television. Mainly via smartphones, social media and apps. When I’m on a reading trip, I like to read the newspaper in the hotel in the morning. My favorite newspaper is FAZ because we already had it at home then. My parents have FAZ and FAS, which is what I grew up with. And I also gain “time” when I travel.

What’s your best topic for small talk?

The weather, not in the sense that I hate it, I like the weather and the seasons. And if the person you’re talking to knows what they’re talking about, trash TV. I prefer to watch something with love and islands where people who want to mate meet.

What was the last movie that made you cry?

In “Me, Earl and the Girl,” one of my favorite movies. I watch it a lot and cry every time.

Totally. If I see a black cat, I go back. I don’t want to challenge my destiny.

What can you laugh about?

Above all. My humor goes a long way and sometimes crosses borders. Humor is definitely a way to deal with my environment, even if it’s sad and mean.

Ida and Franzi. I like Tilda in terms of meaning because it’s a strong feminine name, but I like the sound of Ida. And Franzi is my little sister. Franzi also looks like a Franzi.

Do you take a lunch break?

As a child, I didn’t like nap time when my mother told me after kindergarten: “Close the shutters, now go to sleep.” But I needed a break to go out, eat something, talk to someone on the phone. I like it, and it’s what I look forward to when I write.

In which country would you like to live?

For me Germany is good at the moment, I like it up in the north, on the coast. Even though many things bother me, especially politics, it is still my home.

What is never missing in your fridge?

I always have yogurt on hand, preferably vanilla, chocolate, caramel. And if there are interesting new varieties or “winter editions” then I really like those too.

Do you feel freer with or without a car?

With. Stupid, but I’ve had a new car for a year and nowhere do I feel as free as in my convertible.

What is your greatest talent?

What do you do even if it’s unreasonable?

Which historical figure would you like to meet?

Franz Kafka, definitely. When I’m bored, I often look at what Franz Kafka wrote in his diary that day. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s mysterious. I would really like to meet him.

Do you wear jewelry? And a watch?

Always a watch, a “casual” Casio, I need it. There is a crescent moon hanging on my chain, I bought it in Bali. I always wear one until it breaks.

Do you have a favorite perfume?

Yes, but I don’t want to reveal it. It’s not as well known, but it goes in the vanilla direction.

What was your best vacation experience?

A family sleigh ride in Grindelwald, Switzerland. We did it every year. My mom was down at the campsite and me, my brothers and dad came down from above. It took two or three hours. I remember laughing with happiness the whole time.

What was the last concert you went to?

I’ve never been to a concert. I don’t know why, it just never happened. I go to readings, exhibitions and the cinema, but not to concerts.

What are you missing for happiness?

The question can be understood as ambiguous, right? I am lucky that there are no serious illnesses in my family. And if it means something else: I have the feeling that I’m still missing something to be happy, I just don’t know what. But in the last year I have approached happiness through writing; that’s where I found my home and my happiness.

What do you drink for dinner?

Usually mineral water at home and a glass of red wine when out.
