President Joe Biden promised, this Sunday (1), that the United States will not abandon Ukraine, even with the withdrawal of aid to Kiev in a temporary agreement to avoid a shutdown of the federal government, known as ‘shutdown’.
“I want to assure our allies, the American people and the people of Ukraine that they can count on our support. We will not abandon them,” Biden said in a speech at the White House.
Biden highlighted that there is an “overwhelming sense of urgency” to get Congress to approve a new assistance package to Ukraine in the coming days and weeks as the country faces the Russian invasion.
A last-minute deal reached by Congress on Saturday night to avoid a shutdown of federal services in the United States did not include any new wartime aid to Ukraine, as part of a compromise between Republicans and Democrats.
Democrat Biden criticized Republicans and asked House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (Republican) to avoid another shutdown drama when this new 45-day emergency agreement expires.
“I’m sick and tired of risky politics,” Biden said, speaking in the White House’s Roosevelt Room. “This situation needs to end. There shouldn’t be another crisis.”
