Title: BJP President Criticizes Minister Muthuswamy’s Remark on Drinking Alcohol in the Morning

Date: August 12, 2022

Coimbatore: BJP State President Annamalai has raised concerns about the recent statements made by Minister for Prohibition and Prohibition Muthuswamy, suggesting that only those who do hard work, such as cleaning, consume alcohol in the morning.

Minister Muthuswamy made these comments during a press conference in Coimbatore yesterday, stating that individuals engaged in physically demanding jobs turn to alcohol in the morning due to unavoidable reasons. He further emphasized that such individuals should not be labeled as drunkards.

Reacting to this statement, BJP President Annamalai took to Twitter and expressed his disappointment. He stated, “I am deeply saddened to see the explanation given by Minister Muthuswamy in the media regarding the study of why alcohol should be sold early in the morning. The solution is not to sell alcohol in the morning but to change the status quo of manual sewage disposal by sanitation workers and find alternatives.”

Annamalai referred to the Tamil Nadu Government’s Ordinance No. 425, issued on August 12, 2022, which explicitly prohibited sanitation workers in the state from manually removing waste. He pointed out that over the past five years, Tamil Nadu alone has witnessed the death of 56 sanitation workers while on duty.

Annamalai raised the question of whether the minister was implying that sanitation workers should engage in manual waste disposal after consuming alcohol. He emphasized the need for rehabilitating these workers and highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the central government, such as providing financial aid, skill development training, self-employment opportunities, medical insurance, and the Namaste scheme to prevent sanitation worker deaths.

The BJP President criticized the Tamil Nadu government for not utilizing these welfare schemes and instead focusing on increasing the sale of liquor. He urged the government to prioritize the well-being of sanitation workers and include the central government’s welfare measures in their policies.
