BNP Leader Salahuddin Ahmed Returns to Bangladesh⁢ After 9 Years

BNP ⁣Standing Committee member⁣ Salahuddin Ahmed has returned to⁤ Bangladesh after nine years in exile. He arrived in Dhaka from Delhi, ​India ‍on Sunday afternoon (August 11) ⁢at 2:30 pm.

BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir⁣ Khan confirmed that Salahuddin Ahmed landed at the airport at the same ‍time. He was‍ greeted⁣ by ⁢a delegation including party Vice-Chairman​ Barkat‍ Ullah Bulu, Senior Joint Secretary General⁢ Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, ⁣Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, and his​ wife. Other notable figures present were Jahangir, Chhatra⁢ Dal General ‍Secretary Nasir,⁢ and several others.

Salahuddin’s return comes after a tumultuous⁢ legal battle that began ⁤in 2015​ when ⁣he illegally entered India. He was eventually acquitted of the charges in ⁢2018, but bureaucratic ⁢hurdles prevented him from returning home. He finally received a travel permit‌ in⁤ August 2024 and is now able to​ set foot ​in his home country.

A prominent figure in the BNP, Salahuddin Ahmed served ‌as the APS to former⁤ Prime ‍Minister⁣ Khaleda‍ Zia‌ and was‌ elected to Parliament in 2001. He held various⁢ government positions during the BNP-Jamaat coalition ⁤government.‍ He was arrested ⁤in Meghalaya ⁣in 2007 and ‍later became a member​ of the party’s standing⁣ committee ‍while serving his ‌sentence in India.
