During the first week of school break in Colombia, the Traffic and Transport Directorate of the National Police issued more than 3,500 summonses, highlighting violations due to lack of technical-mechanical inspection and lack of mandatory insurance. This increase in sanctions is part of an effort to strengthen controls on the country’s roads, with the aim of reducing road accidents, according to the entity.
The Minister of Transport, María Constanza García, emphasized the urgency of road bans, highlighting factors such as excessive speed, fatigue, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and the use of mobile phones while driving driving as the main cause of accidents. In addition, he emphasized the importance of checking the condition of the brakes, lights and tires, as well as the use of the seat belt before going on a trip.
According to data from the National Road Safety Observatory (Onsv), in 2023, 271 deaths were recorded in road accidents, of which 65.31% involved motorcyclists. This group, in particular, was subject to a special call to follow traffic rules and use protective equipment such as gloves, helmets, reflective vests and jackets with protections.
The cities of Bogotá, Medellín and Barranquilla were identified as the most affected by road traffic deaths during the October holiday season. In response, the Transport sector, in collaboration with the traffic authorities, has implemented controls in 12 high traffic areas to encourage safe driving on the roads.
Travelers were advised to plan their routes and stops, obey traffic regulations, and check the condition of their vehicles before embarking on their journey. The importance of avoiding distractions behind the wheel and checking road conditions was also highlighted.
Finally, Colonel Claudia Susana Blanco, the Director of Transport and Transportation, urged road users to obey the rules and cooperate with the authorities during the rest week.
