Hours before the Supreme Court of the United States reversed the ruling that legalized abortion in that country, the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonarocriticized on his social networks the legal decision of the abortion that was performed on an 11-year-old girl, seven months pregnant, who had been raped. “It is inadmissible to talk about taking the life of this defenseless being!”Bolsonaro tweeted and ordered the Ministries of Justice and Women, Family and Human Rights to investigate the “abuses” committed.
“A baby of seven months gestation, it is not discussed how it was generated, whether or not it is supported by law”Bolsonaro pointed out in his first tweet before describing as “inadmissible” a decision that, he acknowledged, is contemplated in Brazilian law. The case of the 11-year-old girl had awakened the reaction of society that on social networks accompanied the request that an abortion be performed with the slogan “A girl is not a mother.”
In spite of the brazilian law –what aboutIt condemns abortion with a sentence of 1 and 3 years in prison, but enables it under three causes, including rape–, Bolsonaro expanded on the networks about his beliefs and wrote in a thread: “The only certain thing about the tragedy of the 7-month-pregnant girl is that both she and the baby were victims, innocent souls, lives that should not pay so they are not guilty.” And he described as “ruthless harassment of pro-abortion groups” those who supported the decision of the girl.
“We know that this is a delicate case, but taking the life of an innocent person, in addition to violating the fundamental right of every human being, does not heal wounds or do justice to anyone, on the contrary, abortion only exacerbates this tragedy! There will always be other ways!”, considered the Brazilian president and shared the photo of a seven-month-old baby.
After that first thread of messages, Bolsonaro was in charge of responding with another series of messages to the newspaper The globe –a representative of the Brazilian elites, but an opponent of Bolsonaro–, who had published about the far-right president’s messages with the title: “Bolsonaro criticizes the abortion of an 11-year-old girl who was the victim of rape: ‘Inadmissible’!” .
“Globo, it is no use inducing people to think that we are somehow in cahoots with a crime as barbaric as rape, or that we do not care about the suffering of an 11-year-old child. It is you who shows contempt for a of the victims: the 7-month-old child,” Jair Mesias Bolsonaro defended himself.
And he repeated slogans from so-called “pro-life” groups such as “Why is he who defends two lives worse than he who defends only one?” The delay in carrying out the abortion of the 11-year-old girl was due to the opposition of the judge of Santa Catarina (south) Joana Ribeiro Zimmons, who had ruled againstdespite current regulations.
“For us, both the 11-year-old and the 7-month-old are lives that must be preserved. For you and all those who promoted this barbarism, only one of these lives matters and the other can be disposed of in a landfill, even if there is possibility of avoiding it,” Bolsonaro insisted.
