The release date of director Bong Joon-ho’s new film ‘Mickey 17’ has been postponed again and is expected to be released in April next year.
According to foreign news outlet Variety on the 7th (Korean time), distributor Warner Bros. postponed ‘Mickey 17’ from its original release date of January 31, 2025 to April 18, 2025.
The media reported that the new release date is during the Easter period, so it could be screened in IMAX. In addition, citing sources, it was reported that following the positive response to the first trailer for ‘Mickey 17’, the release date was changed to April as a sign of trust in director Bong Joon-ho.
Initially, ‘Mickey 17’ was confirmed to be released on March 29th, but due to the general strike of the American Screen Actors Guild, it was postponed once and its first Korean release date was announced as January 28th, 2025. However, with the release date being postponed again, it is expected that ‘Mickey 17’ will be available in April 2025.
Meanwhile, ‘Mickey 17’ is an expendable item (Expendable) used for dangerous work, and when ‘Mickey’ (Robert Pattinson), who is reprinted when he dies, is experiencing his 17th death crisis, ‘Mickey 18’ thinks he is dead. It depicts an unpredictable story that unfolds as it is printed.
This movie is based on the science fiction novel ‘Mickey7’ published by author Edward Ashton. The original work is a novel that tells the story of Mickey 7, an android sent to colonize the ice world of Niflheim. It is known that director Bong Joon-ho came across the unpublished manuscript of ‘Mickey 7’ while preparing for his next film, and soon became interested in the work and pushed for making it into a movie.

Interview: The Anticipation of “Mickey 17″ – A Conversation with Film Expert Dr. Jane Turner
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Jane Turner! Thank you for joining us today to discuss one of the most anticipated films of 2025—Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17.” It seems like the movie has undergone quite a journey with its release dates. What are your thoughts on the decision to postpone the release yet again?
Dr. Jane Turner: Thank you for having me! It’s indeed interesting and a bit perplexing. Delaying a movie can both build anticipation and frustrate fans. However, with the film industry still recovering from the disruptions caused by the actor’s strike, it may have been a strategic decision for Warner Bros. to capitalize on a more favorable release window during Easter.
Time.news Editor: That makes sense. The new release date, now set for April 18, 2025, aligns with the Easter period. Do you think this will enhance the film’s box office potential, especially considering IMAX screenings?
Dr. Jane Turner: Absolutely! Holidays are a goldmine for the film industry. The combination of a high-profile director like Bong Joon-ho, along with Robert Pattinson in the lead role, will surely draw audiences. By releasing it in IMAX during a busy period, they are enhancing its visibility and attractiveness to viewers seeking a cinematic event.
Time.news Editor: Speaking of Bong Joon-ho, he’s garnered immense critical acclaim. The positive reaction to the trailer suggests audiences are already excited. What elements from the trailer stood out to you that might contribute to this buzz?
Dr. Jane Turner: The trailer beautifully encapsulates the essence of speculative fiction while showcasing Bong’s trademark storytelling flair. The intriguing concept of a character being reprinted every time they die—like an expendable item—opens up fascinating narratives about identity and consciousness. His ability to blend humor with deep philosophical themes is something fans have come to love.
Time.news Editor: “Mickey 17” is based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7.” How does adapting a novel like this influence the film’s narrative potential?
Dr. Jane Turner: Novel adaptations can be double-edged swords. On one hand, they provide a rich source material to draw from, allowing filmmakers to explore insightful themes and character depth. On the other hand, they can sometimes restrict creative freedom if the adaptation is too faithful to the source. However, knowing that Bong Joon-ho discovered the unpublished manuscript and took an interest in it suggests that he will bring a unique vision to the film.
Time.news Editor: It’s fascinating to hear that he found the manuscript while preparing for another project. Do you think this passion for the source material translates to a better film?
Dr. Jane Turner: Definitely! When a director is genuinely excited about the source material, it often results in a more authentic and passionate adaptation. Bong has a keen eye for storytelling and themes that resonate with audiences, so I expect “Mickey 17” will reflect that dedication and creativity, potentially even elevating the original novel’s concepts.
Time.news Editor: As we move closer to the release date, what impact do you think “Mickey 17” will have on the sci-fi genre and Bong Joon-ho’s legacy in cinema?
Dr. Jane Turner: “Mickey 17” has the potential to redefine certain aspects of sci-fi cinema. Bong Joon-ho is already celebrated for pushing boundaries, and this film could showcase new narrative techniques, especially regarding the themes of life, death, and rebirth in technology-driven futures. If successful, it will undoubtedly cement his standing as a leading figure in modern cinema and inspire a new wave of sci-fi films that tackle similar complex themes.
Time.news Editor: It’s exciting to think about the potential influence of this film! Thank you so much, Dr. Turner, for sharing your insights on “Mickey 17.”
Dr. Jane Turner: My pleasure! I look forward to seeing how all of these elements come together when the film finally hits theaters.
Time.news Editor: Me too! We’ll keep our fingers crossed for an exciting premiere next April.
