In July 2024, tariff was increased by private Indian telecom companies, due to which the plans became expensive for the consumers. Its effect was seen in the form of increase in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) figures. According to TRAI data, monthly ARPU for wireless services increased by 9.60% to Rs 172.57 in the September 2024 quarter from Rs 157.45 in the June 2024 quarter. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, monthly ARPU of wireless services grew by 15.31%. Monthly ARPU for prepaid subscribers was recorded at Rs 171 and for postpaid segment at Rs 190.67.

  • Indian telecom sector’s gross revenue (GR) increased by 6.27% QoQ to Rs 91,426 crore.
  • Applicable gross revenue (ApGR) reached Rs 88,236 crore, up 6.20% QoQ.
  • Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) stood at Rs 75,310 crore, registering a QoQ growth of 6.74%.
  • On YoY basis, GR, ApGR, and AGR grew by 10.50%, 10.64%, and 13.11% respectively.

increase in license fee

  • With the increase in AGR, the license fee also increased.
  • It was Rs 5,645 crore in the June 2024 quarter, which increased to Rs 6,023 crore in the September 2024 quarter.

Decline in wireless user base

The tariff hike led to a decline in the wireless user base in the country. During the September 2024 quarter, the industry lost 16.80 million wireless subscribers. According to TRAI data, Indian telecom companies are seeing a rise in their ARPU and total revenue as more customers are now recharging with higher priced tariffs.
