The baby’s mother, Sam Drainon, told NBC News that she was diagnosed with a heart tumor when she was 25 weeks pregnant. Doctors recommended that the fetus be kept alive. Soon after, Sam underwent surgery. The doctors told Sam and David that there was a risk of circulatory problems and that the tumor growing on the left side of the baby’s heart should be removed immediately.

Subsequently, the young woman underwent a 36-hour operation at Cleveland Hospital. The uterus had to be surgically removed. The doctors were able to lift both hands of the fetus to the chest and remove the tumor there. Subsequently, the blood flow was restored and the fetus was placed in the womb for full maturity and delivery.
