The leaders of the sixteenth BRICS summit, held in the Russian city of Kazan, announced the adoption of the “Kazan Declaration,” a comprehensive document aimed at strengthening cooperation among the BRICS countries, under the title “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security.”
In the “Kazan Declaration,” the BRICS countries affirmed their “commitment to multilateralism and to preserving the central role of the United Nations in the international system.”
The document said: “We affirm the emergence of new centers of power, political decision-making, and economic growth, which will help lay the foundations for a more just, democratic, and balanced multipolar global system.”
The declaration stressed that “multipolarity can allow developing countries and emerging market countries to expand and unlock their constructive potential and guarantee for all comprehensive, just, equitable and beneficial globalization and cooperation.”
The document added: “Taking into account the necessity of better adapting the modern structure of international relations to new realities, we reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism and respect for international law, including the goals and principles stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations, as an essential and integral element thereof, and to preserving The central role of the United Nations in the international system in which sovereign states cooperate in the interest of maintaining international peace and security, while promoting sustainable development, promoting and protecting democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all and cooperation on the basis of solidarity, mutual respect, justice and equality.”
The leaders of the BRICS countries stressed “the need to ensure fair and comprehensive geographical representation in a timely manner in the United Nations Secretariat and in other international organizations.”
In the declaration, the BRICS countries affirmed their “opposition to the unilateral measures taken under the pretext of combating climate change,” and the document said: “We oppose the unilateral measures imposed under the pretext of combating climate change and protecting the environment, and we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening coordination on these issues.”
