This unprecedented agreement, known as the “Trinity House Agreement,” aims to “strengthen national security and economic growth against Russia,” according to what the British Ministry of Defense announced in a statement Tuesday.
This is the first agreement of its kind between the United Kingdom and Germany, and it also states that the armies of both countries will combine more training to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
Under this agreement, German P8 aircraft will operate “periodically” from the Scottish base in Lossiemouth to “assist” in the defense of the North Atlantic coast.
The agreement also states that the two NATO member states will cooperate to develop long-range offensive weapons that can reach targets beyond those currently achieved by Britain’s Storm Shadow missiles.
The agreement will also see the establishment of a factory to produce British steel cannons, providing more than 400 new job opportunities.
The British Defense Secretary, John Healey, said in the statement that this agreement “is a turning point in our relationship with Germany and makes a significant contribution to the security of Europe.”
“We will build on this new collaboration in the coming months and years,” he said.
For his part, German Minister Boris Pistorius said the agreement was evidence that “the United Kingdom and Germany are getting closer” after 14 years when the Conservatives came to power in Britain and the Kingdom left the Union European.
The German minister warned: “We should not take security in Europe because of the situation.”
