Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the travel ban and asset freeze would target “illicit financial networks that enable smugglers to take advantage of vulnerable people”.
Starmer emphasized that criminal gangs “are a threat to global security and must be treated as terrorist networks.”
The government said the new sanctions, which require parliamentary approval, will come into force within a year.
The Labor government, elected in July, has pledged to crack down on criminal gangs who send thousands of migrants each year on dangerous journeys through one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
It is not clear how effective these measures are, as the British authorities can only freeze assets located in the United Kingdom, and most smugglers live outside of it.
