Brotherhood of the Buried Lord, Christ of Love, will participate in the Second Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety in Seville, Spain
In December 2024, the Brotherhood of the Buried Lord, Christ of Loveof the Santo Domingo Temple, will represent Guatemala in the Second International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety. This important event will take place in Seville, Spainfrom December 4 to 8, and will bring together brothers and devotees from around the world to share traditions and experiences of faith.
The congress, which is held every 25 years, will be inaugurated on December 4 in the Cathedral of Seville, with the participation of Pope Francis’ delegate, Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra. During those days, activities will include presentations, exhibitions and a solemn closing procession with images representative of the popular piety of Seville.
Guatemala present at the event
The news of the participation of the Brotherhood of the Buried Lord, Christ of Lovewas shared this Tuesday, October 22, at a press conference held at the National Palace of Culture. The event was attended by Liwy Grazioso Sierra, Minister of Culture and Sports; Fra George-Massimo Pittalis, president of the Brotherhood of the Buried Lord Christ of Love; Bernal Díaz Baeza, General Manager of the Brotherhood; and Patricio Zambrano, UNESCO representative in Guatemala.
During his speech, Bernal Díaz expressed the honor of bringing Guatemalan traditions to an international stage. «It is a commitment to carry the traditions and customs that have been rooted in Guatemala and that, for this reason, have allowed us to be named World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. I believe that taking the name of Saint Dominic to this Congress in Seville, Spain, is taking the name, not only of a temple, not only of a basilica, not only of the order of preachers, but of an entire country, as such, that carries and lives its traditions […]», declared Díaz.
The brotherhood will carry out a series of activities at the congress to highlight Guatemalan devotion. Among them, photographic and audiovisual exhibitions will be presented that portray the work of the brotherhood, the traditional Santo Entierro procession, and the solemn Good Friday procession in Guatemala City.
The brotherhood’s participation in the congress was possible after its application was accepted between May and June 2024.
Twinning with Seville and other international ties
During the press conference, the twinning between the Brotherhood of the Holy Burial of Seville and the Brotherhood of the Buried Lord, Christ of Love of Guatemala was also announced. This act reinforces the cultural, historical and spiritual ties between both cities.
This twinning is not the first carried out by the Guatemalan brotherhood. In previous years, the Brotherhood of the Temple of Santo Domingo has also established fraternal relationships with Holy Week institutions in Zamora and Medina del Campo, Spain.
