The Federal Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents (BVKJ) has called for an extension of the flu vaccination recommendation to all children and adolescents, arguing that the current focus on high-risk children is insufficient.

Association president Michael Hubmann emphasized the need for widespread vaccination, stating that even healthy children can be carriers of the flu virus. He highlighted the potential for children to spread the virus to more vulnerable individuals, such as grandparents, who are at higher risk of developing dangerous influenza.

Hubmann also warned of a looming wave of flu, citing a late start to the flu season but a rapid increase in cases. He expects a strong wave of flu, potentially with a second peak at the end of February, particularly affecting school-age children and young adults.

In addition to advocating for expanded vaccination recommendations, Hubmann expressed concern about a shortage of pediatricians and called for relief for medical practices. He highlighted the impact of unnecessary bureaucracy, noting that 30 percent of their work has nothing to do with caring for children.

To address these concerns, representatives of the private medical profession are set to meet with Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach to discuss measures for general practitioners’ practices. This includes the potential lifting of fee caps and easing bureaucratic requirements and regulations for home visits.

The BVKJ’s call for widespread flu vaccination and relief for medical practices comes amid heightened concerns about the spread of influenza and the strain on healthcare resources.]
