Canadian authorities have arrested three Indian men and accused them of killing Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nigar last year, indicating that they are investigating whether the men have ties to the Indian government.

The Sikh separatist leader was shot dead in June last year, outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a suburb of the Canadian city of Vancouver, which has a large Sikh population. A few months after his killing, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the crime, which sparked… Diplomatic crisis with New Delhi.

Canadian police revealed that the three men are (Karanpreet Singh, 28 years old), (Kamalpreet Singh, 22 years old), and (Karan Brar, 22 years old).

“We are investigating their ties, if any, to the Indian government,” RCMP Superintendent Mandeep Moker said in a televised news conference.

Canadian police reported that they worked with American law enforcement agencies, without providing additional details, and suggested that more arrests would occur.

She added: “This investigation does not end here. We recognize that others may have played a role in this murder, and we remain committed to finding and arresting every one of these individuals.”

The police indicated that the three, all of whom are Indian citizens, were arrested in the city of Edmonton in Alberta yesterday, Friday, and are scheduled to arrive in the province of British Columbia, where the city of Vancouver is located, by Monday.

In September, the Canadian Prime Minister announced that the Canadian authorities were pursuing allegations linking Indian government agents to Nigar’s murder. New Delhi rejected Trudeau’s claims as “absurd.”

“We welcome the arrests but this leads to more questions,” said Balpreet Singh, legal advisor and spokesman for the Canada-based Global Sikh Organization.

He added: “Those who were arrested are part of an assassination squad, but it is clear that they received instructions.”
