February 2020 changed the way we see the world. The Covid pandemic has radically changed our behavior: masks (with the difficulties in finding them initially), social distancing, reduction of unnecessary travel, blocking of production activities with important economic consequences. There have been deaths (and how many), there has been the subversion of the NHS activity with the clogging of hospitals and the difficulties of the territory. On the one hand the fear of contagion, on the other the need to restart.
Technologies and home care
From this experience we should have learned something that could come in handy in the future. We have learned that the definition of paths can reduce the risk of contagion and that a good organization is the basis of the functioning of the whole system. We must have understood that the health care activity must be carried out in the round with a link between hospital and territory, with the strengthening of territorial medicine and the need for proximity nurses, removing the hospital-centric role for what does not require special instruments. . And again: we have understood that digital technology, if well organized, can support the activity in the presence, without replacing it completely, reducing the access of patients and their problems of movement. That there are treatments, even for oncological pathologies, which can be (at least in part) managed at home with great advantage for our patients. That it is not always possible to have a treatment that heals the pathology, but it is always possible to help the patient to reduce his suffering.
Scientific research
We learned to work as a team: working all together was what the virus forced us to do but, in this way, we understood a lot from colleagues from different disciplines, obtaining what the multidisciplinary culture had only partially managed to do. We have learned that scientific research must always be methodologically correct, but that the results obtained in one area of medicine can be useful for the development of treatments in other areas. Proof of this are the mRNA vaccines, often referred to as experiments carried out in a hurry, but which, in reality, are the fruit of the development of what for many years has been the subject of study in cancer therapies. We have understood, and by now it should also be clear to politics, that health expenses are not a cost, but an investment.
Prevention
It is the best investment to promote prevention as much as possible. Over 40% of avoidable cancer cases by adopting simple rules, such as not smoking and following a correct diet: precisely with the aim of improving the level of awareness on the risk of cancer among all citizens in the coming months, our scientific society will launch new awareness campaigns. We do not yet know if we have come out of the tunnel, but today we know that even negative experiences can produce important benefits.
