Filming for “Breath of Life” took place throughout the fall of 2025 in and around Aurillac,in the Cantal region of france,with only two days of shooting remaining in aurillac and Anglards-de-Salers. Supported by Cantal Attractiveness, the film actively showcases the region’s unique culture and landscapes. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the production aims to address universal social themes that resonate with audiences globally.
A Groundbreaking Casting Decision
In a move lauded for its dedication to authenticity, the director actively sought an actress who shared the lived experience of blindness. “For the sake of authenticity, the director made the strong choice to entrust the main role to a truly blind person,” according to reports. This led to a thorough search across France,culminating in the selection of Jelly le Bourgeois,an 80-year-old Parisian woman who lost her sight several years ago.
Le Bourgeois’s performance was described as possessing “sincere emotional intensity and a form of embodied truth.” She is joined by Olivier Perrier, who plays her husband Joseph, and who reportedly fostered a strong and supportive acting partnership with Le bourgeois.
The director’s Personal Connection
The film’s origins are deeply personal for Benit, who drew inspiration from his maternal grandmother. “My maternal grandmother, originally from Arpajon and a great source of inspiration for this film, lost her sight following early glaucoma,” the director shared. “As a child, I looked at her with tenderness, I appreciated her ability to listen and her fragility. As I grew older and became more independent, I realized the extent of her courage and developed a fascination with her determination to remain as independent as possible. I would like to tell his story, which is intimate and universal, in a faithful and sensitive way.”
Distribution and Future Plans
“Breath of Life” is a co-production of REKA Pictures and Blue Bear Production, with support from the German Film Fund. The film aims for a wider release following its premiere, targeting international film festivals and arthouse cinemas. The producers hope to secure distribution deals that will bring the story to audiences beyond France and Germany.
