The spusu Vienna Capitals had to admit the victory in the EC-KAC 3:5 on Tuesday evening in front of 5,950 spectators in the Arena STEFFL. After an excellent first third, the Viennese are 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Jérémy Grégoire (17th) and Leon Wallner (19th). The visitors from Klagenfurt drew level in the middle third with goals from Matt Fraser (23rd) and Johannes Bischofberger (26/SH1). In the final third, the Red Jackets scored a double blow with goals from Nick Petersen and Thomas Hundertpfund within 13 seconds (43′). Evan Jasper brings the Capitals close again (45th), and less than a minute later Simeon Schwinger plays a shot from Maximilian Preiml for the final score (46th). The spusu Vienna Capitals played for the last time before the international break on November 3rd against Steinbach Black Wings Linz.
Before the classic started against the EC-KAC, the spusu Vienna Capitals honored their honorary president Hans Schmid. President Martin Reiss, Vice-President Philipp Felsinger and the 5,950 spectators present duly celebrated the successful entrepreneur, who led the capital’s club for more than two decades. Caps coach Gerry Fleming was able to rely on Jérémy Grégoire and Niki Hartl again against the Red Jackets. Brett Kemp, Tyler Parks and Lukas Piff were injured again. Anders Lindbäck started again in goal, he had to intervene for the first time in the first minute, but Thomas Hundertpfund’s return was unchallenged. Evan Jasper picked up the puck in the third opposition in the second minute, but the cross pass in front of the goal did not reach Aljaž Predan Aljaž Predan. In the fourth minute, Peter Krieger appeared in front of Sebastian Dahm, but the American shot did not reach the goal. In return, Lindbäck let KAC striker Mathias Ó go. The game heated up early in the game, with players from both teams attacking each other after almost every break, including in the fifth minute after Dahm’s save. This was also reflected in the penalties awarded moments later against Jack Dougherty and Finn van Ee. Both players went to the penalty box for excessive hardness. Shortly after, goalkeeper Hartl shot the puck over the goal from a good position. Mario Fischer took the puck behind the opponent’s goal in the eighth minute, but Jason Willms was unable to get the puck to the goal after passing it. The Caps had their first power play in the ninth minute. David Maier had to leave the ice because of a high stick. In the tenth minute, the Viennese scored two goals, but Jasper and Seamus Donohue were denied by Dahm. Shortly afterwards the Klagenfurt team was finished again. The Caps restricted the visitors in succession. Steven Strong fired the shot over the glass from his own third in the 12th minute. The result was a delay of game penalty and the next Caps power play. Immediately after the start, Mathias Böhm missed his shot. Carinthians fought back in the 13th minute, but ex-Caps Simeon Schwinger’s shot went over the target. KAC’s first power play started in the 15th minute, Fischer was penalized for tripping. The Viennese defended the rock firmly when they were higher than ever and were even able to set up a counter-attack, but it turned out in front of the KAC goal. Shortly after Fischer’s return, the Caps were in the lead. Dahm threw a shot from Dominique Heinrich, the puck jumped into the slot where Grégoire made an ice save on his return (17th). Two minutes later almost the same picture. Dahm deflected Fischer’s shot into the slot, where Leon Wallner scored to make it 2-0 (19′).
At the beginning of the middle third, Lindbäck kept an eye on a shot from close range. The visitors shortened the score in the 23rd minute. A shot by Matt Fraser hit the goal. Moments later, Dougherty and Oliver Lam got into a scuffle in which the Caps defenseman put his opponent on the ice. Both players received two minute penalties for excessive force. The next penalty was against Maier in the 26th minute. This time the KAC defender was penalized for a head check. Heinrich lost the puck during the play before the game, Johannes Bischofberger ran towards Lindbäck and scored the equalizer when he was higher (27th). The Viennese, however, were unable to score and KAC survived the outnumbered situation without conceding a goal. In the 30th minute, the Klagenfurt team lost the puck in their own third, but Armin Preiser was unable to beat Dahm with his shot from a tight angle. On the other hand, Lindbäck blocked another goal. In the 33rd minute, Krieger had to go to the penalty box for possession. After 42 seconds passed without danger, the next penalty was awarded to the Caps. Dougherty was a tall stick. From now on, the Klagenfurt team had two more players on the ice, but they were unable to convert this into another goal. The Caps even had their own chances; after Franklin’s prep work, Donohue tried from the left, but Dahm was there. Fischer and van Ee got into a fight in the 37th minute, which led to penalties for excessive force. 58 seconds later, From was assessed a penalty for cross-checking, and once again the Caps were unable to capitalize on his superiority.
Jasper had the first good chance of the final third, but was unable to get the puck out. In the 43rd minute, the visitors achieved the final turnaround with a double strike. After Lindbäck’s save, Nick Petersen put the puck into the back of the net to give the Red Jackets the lead. 13 seconds later Centaur widened this after a solo (43′). Then Caps head coach Fleming took a timeout to convince his team. Two minutes later the Caps shortened the score. Krieger with a cross pass to Jasper, who gave Dahm a chance (45th). Moments later, however, the visitors restored their old lead. Schwinger deflected a shot from Maximilian Preiml in front of Lindbäck (46th). A few seconds later, Fraser fired the disc onto the crossbar. The game continued until Hundredpound were penalized for interference in the 52nd minute. In the 53rd minute, Lindbäck had to save against the counter-attack pacer. Sweden also succeeded against Fraser a minute later. The Klagenfurt team took no damage, but in the 54th minute there was another penalty against van Ee, this time for a cross-check – another power play for the Caps. Franklin made two shots from the left when he was in the majority, but missed both times. About two and a half minutes before the end, Lindbäck went off the ice for another attacker, but the Capitals were no longer able to threaten Dahm. With one second left in the game, Grégoire was sent to the penalty box for goalkeeper interference. According to official statistics, the Caps fired 25 shots and the KAC fired 27.

“We made a great start, we went to work with a lot of energy, we were physical, the penalty kill was good. I can repeat myself, but there is very little room for error in this series. If you lose the puck, they pay you. That’s exactly what happened again today. Our power play let us down again today. We have to keep working on that.”
