Numbness of extremities not necessarily linked to heart disease, says cardiologist

Al-Marsad Newspaper: In a recent statement, consultant cardiologist Dr. Munawar Al-Enezi emphasized that numbness of the extremities is a common symptom that is not necessarily related to heart disease. Dr. Al-Enezi described numbness as a tingling feeling or a partial or complete loss of sensation.

During a tweet on his Twitter account, Dr. Al-Enezi listed various causes of limb numbness. These include constant pressure on the nerve due to incorrect sleeping or sitting positions, diabetes, migraines, a decrease in vitamin B12, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium levels, multiple sclerosis, compression of a nerve between the vertebrae, pressure on the nerve from a tumor or fibrosis, nerve damage from chemotherapy, and skin damage from shingles.

According to Dr. Al-Enezi, numbness of the extremities occurs when the nerves are irritated and send incorrect signals to the wrong places. This is typically a result of constant pressure on the nerves, which interrupts the natural flow of signals between the brain and the peripheral nerves. This also leads to a reduction in blood flow to the nerves, causing them to become stagnant or inactive.

Dr. Al-Enezi added that when pressure on the nerve is relieved, it can become excessively active, sending signals without regulation and to incorrect areas. This can result in a temporary sensation of tingling or numbness. However, there are certain symptoms of limb numbness that should prompt a visit to the doctor. These include numbness that progressively worsens without a known cause, numbness that only affects a specific part of the extremities such as the fingers, numbness that worsens with repeated movements, numbness accompanied by a rash in the same area, numbness accompanied by vision problems, severe sudden headaches, dizziness or fainting, difficulty speaking, numbness after a head injury, numbness accompanied by chest pain, numbness of the entire arm or leg, and weakness in movement.

Dr. Al-Enezi’s statement serves as a reminder that numbness of the extremities is not always a sign of heart disease. It is important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment, especially when experiencing any concerning symptoms.]
