Data Strategy Remains Paramount for Chief Digital Officers,Deloitte Study Finds

A new report indicates that a robust data strategy is a top priority for chief digital officers (CDOs) across all organizational structures, even as interest in artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly expands.

A recent study by Deloitte, based on a survey of 81 CDOs, reveals a consistent focus on data governance and strategic planning, irrespective of whether companies operate with centralized or decentralized data models. The findings underscore the critical role of data in achieving competitive advantage and driving digital transformation.

The Enduring Importance of Data Strategy

according to the Deloitte research, CDOs recognize that a clearly defined “direction of travel” for data is essential. This involves establishing a cohesive approach to data management, mitigating the risks associated with data silos and redundant efforts. A shared, documented vision empowers CDOs to articulate how data should be leveraged to enhance performance and achieve overarching strategic objectives.

“Organisations are clearly doubling down on data, rapidly increasing their data maturity and literacy to gain crucial competitive advantage,” a senior official stated. “This is positioning the CDO role as a pivotal and increasingly influential force across the C-suite, helping to drive sustained growth.”

Did you know? – the CDO role is becoming more influential, driving growth across organizations as data maturity increases.

AI Adoption on the Rise, But Requires Foundation

While AI isn’t yet fully transforming organizations, the survey indicates a important shift toward its adoption.Approximately 70% of CDOs are currently implementing AI systems or conducting proof-of-concept projects to explore its potential. This suggests a growing recognition of AI’s transformative power, but also highlights the need for further development of AI capabilities.

The research demonstrates a clear correlation between data management maturity and strategic priorities. CDOs in organizations with higher maturity levels are increasingly focused on leveraging data for business value. Specifically, over two-thirds (67%) prioritize AI or generative AI (GenAI), followed by the development of data products (56%). This reflects a desire to capitalize on cutting-edge technologies and create tangible, value-driven offerings.

Pro tip: Organizations with high data maturity are actively hiring AI, GenAI, and machine learning experts.

Prioritizing Foundational Elements for Lower Maturity Organizations

For organizations with lower perceived data management maturity, the focus remains on building a solid foundation. data governance emerged as the top priority for 63% of CDOs in this group, followed by data strategy (41%) and data quality (33%). These results emphasize the essential groundwork required to establish reliable and well-managed data assets.

Deloitte reported that organizations with high data maturity are actively seeking to hire talent with expertise in AI, GenAI, and machine learning, alongside strong communication skills to effectively integrate these technologies across the enterprise. Conversely, organizations with lower maturity are prioritizing skills in change management, data engineering, and fostering a data-driven culture, signaling a broader transformation underway.

Reader question: What should organizations with low data maturity prioritize? Data governance, strategy, and quality are key.

Consistent Focus on Data Strategy

The importance of data strategy remains remarkably consistent. Deloitte found that around one-third of CDOs listed data strategy as a top priority, a figure consistent with last year’s findings. This consistency underscores the enduring value of data as a strategic asset for maintaining a competitive edge and leading digital transformation initiatives.

“Those CDOs championing AI and GenAI are anticipating considerably faster benefits, particularly in productivity, highlighting the immediate impact these technologies can deliver,” one analyst noted.

The evolving role of the CDO is becoming increasingly critical as organizations navigate the complexities of the data landscape and strive to unlock the full potential of their da
