The CDU in Saxony has ruled out working with the AfD in a state government. Now, however, there is resistance.
Six CDU members from Saxony have called for talks with the AfD in an open letter. What is needed is “a new political culture of togetherness,” says the letter, which is available to various media. “The political opponent must not be seen as an enemy as long as he does not use violence. This means in particular that all democratically elected representatives talk to all democratically elected representatives – including the AfD!”
The signatories include the former Bundestag member Manfred Kolbe and the former state secretary general Frank Kupfer. According to the signatories, the CDU cannot, in the long term, “work only with parties to the left of it without risking its own free and free-market identity.”
The CDU made an incompatibility decision in 2018 that prohibits cooperation with the AfD and the Left Party. The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer also ruled out a coalition with the right-wing populists after the state elections in September.
