The agreement was announced by the national security chiefs of both countries, the Kyrgyz Kamchybek Tashiyev and the Tajik Saimumim Yati’mov: the two signed a protocol for the cessation of hostilities in the border territory after a meeting in the Batken region.

“The tragedy that has occurred in the border regions must never repeat itself”, said Yatimov, stressing that agreements have been reached to “guarantee peace and stability on Kyrgyz and Tajik soil”. Tashiev confirmed that the signing of the protocol guarantees the return of all military units to their usual barracks. “We are confident that the decisions included in the protocol will be implemented.”

In parallel, Deputy Interior Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Suyun Umurza’kov and Tajikistan, Ibrahimzoda ‘Nozim, decided to create joint police patrols to stabilize the situation and restore public order in the border villages.
