Charli XCX: From Brat to Big Screen | Pop Star’s New Era

Charli XCX Grapples with Fame in Meta mockumentary “The Moment”

A24 is set too release a new film offering a candid look at the pressures of pop stardom, as singer Charli XCX navigates the aftermath of a cultural phenomenon. “The Moment,” a meta mockumentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, explores the complexities of expectation and the challenges of artistic evolution in a demanding industry.

From “brat” to the Big Screen

The film centers on Charli XCX, a 33-year-old artist who rose to prominence after a 16-year journey in the music industry, culminating in the 2024 release of her sixth studio album, “Brat.” The album’s success brought a level of understanding she hadn’t previously experienced, but that feeling proved fleeting. As one source close to the project explained, the singer quickly found herself grappling with a public persona and expectations that didn’t align with her artistic vision.

“Ther was this sort of, kind of, you know, persona that people really associated me with and then there were a lot of expectations put on me as a person, as an artist, of who I was then supposed to be,” Charli XCX stated.”and I didn’t fit into that sort of narrative. I had got to this place where I was finally feeling so understood. Then I was like not understood again.”

A Unique Approach to a Familiar Story

rather than a customary documentary, Charli XCX and director Aidan Zamiri opted for a more unconventional approach, drawing inspiration from films like “This is Spinal Tap” and “Black Swan.” The result is a heightened, yet truthful, portrayal of the pressures faced by artists navigating the demands of fame. The film features cameos from Kylie Jenner and Rachel Sennott, adding another layer of meta-commentary.

“I won’t lie, there are definitely moments where it feels very, very real,” Zamiri said. “But we also wanted to lean into the absurdity of it all. Charli is such a natural performer, and she was willing to really go for it.”

Marketing and the Filmmaking Process

“I love marketing, I really do,” she said. “I think there’s an interesting gap in film between the vision of the filmmaker and the marketing. It’s been really cool working with A24, who are definitely persistent to bridge that gap.”

Expanding Beyond Music

The Sundance Film Festival served as a launching pad for Charli XCX’s acting career, with “The Moment” being one of three films featuring the artist premiering that weekend. She also appeared in Gregg Araki’s “I Want Your Sex” and Cathy Yan’s “The Gallerist,” showcasing her versatility as an actress. A dedicated cinephile with over 1,357 films logged on Letterboxd, Charli XCX expressed her excitement about her growing involvement in the film industry.

“To now be so fully entrenched in the filmmaking industry, has been like everything and more,” she said. She is also contributing a concept album to Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.” “I really am sort of like desperate to like learn more and more and more about, you know, about every part of the film industry: Making a film, being in film. I’m so hungry.”

“The Moment” will open in New York and Los Angeles on January 30 and expand nationwide on February 6. The palpable energy surrounding the film’s release suggests a strong showing, with fans eager to experience Charli XCX’s latest creative endeavor. as Zamiri observed, “I love all the fans wanting to roll up with their sunglasses on and their crop tops. I get the feeling they’ll show up for this like they woudl for a concert. That’s the coolest thing ever.” For more information on the 2026 Sundance Film festival, visit https://apnews.com/hub/sundance-film-festival.
