To the surprise of the fans, Chennai Super Kings announced Ruturaj Gaekwad as the new captain to replace MS Dhoni. The new captain was announced just a day before Chennai’s match against RCB. Everyone thought that Dhoni himself will lead the defending champions Chennai this season as well. But the CSK management declared Ruthuraj as the future captain.
Fans are wondering when the decision was made that Dhoni will not lead the team this season. This was evident when the group photo of the IPL team captains came out. Ruturaj represented Chennai in the photo. Chennai made an official announcement after the photo came out.

But Ruturaj Gaekwad said that Dhoni had given him some hints at the end of the last season. “Mahi bhai gave me some hints about the captaincy last season itself. Be ready… this should not be a surprise for you, he said. “After reaching the team camp, he also engaged me in some important discussions,” Ruthuraj said in a video shared on X.
Ruthuraj said that a recent post shared by Dhoni on Facebook was also an indication of his resignation from the captaincy. Dhoni had posted that he will be seen in a new role in the Chennai team in the new season. Even he thought this was a normal post. But Ruturaj said that everything was clear in it.
There is another special feature when Ruthuraj comes out as captain in the first match against RCB. RCB is led by Faf Duplessis, who was his opening partner earlier. Fans will also get to see Ruturaj Tositan along with former Chennai opener Duplessis.

He is clearly convinced of what Chennai’s success mantra is. He wants to take the team forward on the same path that Dhoni led. Ruthuraj clarified that he is not going to make any specific changes on the field.
“It’s a matter of pride for me. It is a pleasure to be able to continue with a team like Chennai from the beginning of IPL career. A player like Dhoni trusting my captaincy is also a big thing. “I know the road ahead is full of rice fields,” added Ruthuraj.
