Intensifying Northeast Monsoon to Bring Heavy Rains to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for 4 Days

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the next four days as the Northeast Monsoon is intensifying again in the Bay of Bengal and Kumari Sea.

The heavy rains are likely to occur in various districts including Tanjore, Tiruvarur, Nagai, Mayiladuthurai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram, as well as in Puducherry. Since the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, Tamil Nadu has not received widespread rainfall but, according to the department, the situation is likely to change in the coming days.

However, despite the warning, the amount of rainfall has been 16 percent less than usual, with only 25cm of rainfall in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu during the current monsoon season.

According to the Chennai Meteorological Research Centre, the atmospheric circulation is prevailing in the Kumari Kadal regions and light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in most of the coastal districts and a few interior districts.

The re-intensification of the Northeast Monsoon is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rains in various districts, with the possibility of hurricane-force winds in the coastal areas. As a result, fishermen have been advised not to visit those areas.

The impact of the re-intensification of the Northeast Monsoon is expected to be felt for the next four days, with an increase in rainfall in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Residents and authorities are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of the heavy rains.
