Many Ukrainians live in the area, although not directly near the former power plant. They were surprised by the actions of the Russian soldiers and even warned them that they were playing with fire. According to the server, the occupiers knew about the risks but ignored them because they thought they “had thick skin”. And so despite the warning words of the residents they set up a makeshift camp in the Chernobyl forest, where some level of radioactivity still exists.
Moreover, they didn’t just stop at building the camp. At Chernobyl, they dug trenches and, according to the testimony of locals, even fished in the water channel intended for cooling the reactor. Catfish live in abundance in the channel. Furthermore, the Russians shot wild animals and left them lying on the roads.
At the same time, the Chernobyl forest, called the Red Forest, is one of the places where there are still dangerously high levels of radioactivity. Immediately after the power plant accident, the forest absorbed a large dose of radioactive dust and entry to it remains prohibited.
Russian soldiers entered Chernobyl from Belarus and stayed there for several weeks after the invasion began. The place is not important from a military point of view, but it is located “on the road” to Kiev, which was the main objective of the Russian offensive at the time.
“I yelled at them,” the server cites a local 90-year-old senior woman named Hana and her clash with the Russian occupiers. First she tried to explain to them in Russian what was happening in their country and then asked what they were doing here and who they thought they were liberating. But she didn’t get any meaningful answer.
30-year-old Oksana Pyšnová, who used to accompany tourists in the closed Chernobyl zone, was also surprised. “Don’t try to find logic in it, it was stupid” evaluates the actions of Russian soldiers in Chernobyl. “It is (the place where the Russians stayed, editor’s note) the most dangerous area in the entire zone because there is nuclear waste underground,” explains.
