Chicken imports from the United States fell in the month of August compared to 2023, according to data revealed by the US Department of Agriculture.
In the month of August, the Cuban dictatorship, which has Washington as its main supplier of poultry meat, purchased 22,782.6 tons worth 27.9 million dollars, according to reports.
Although the August figure for chicken imports is higher compared to July, when Cuba imported 19,099.2 tons for 23.7 million dollars, compared to August 2023, a drop of 35 percent was recorded. Since that year the communist island bought 35 thousand tons of the protein for 37 point 8 million dollars.
For his part, the Cuban economist Pedro Monreal stated that between January and August 2024, imports of poultry meat were 170 thousand tons, specifying that this figure is lower “in value and tons” than those of the same period in 2023. , when the island imported 198,584 tons.
“Chicken meat exports from the US are the main supply of the most consumed source of animal protein in Cuba and compensate for the acute national agricultural crisis,” added Monreal in a publication on the X social network.
Likewise, the Cuban economist stated that on the island there is a climate of “food insecurity” when seeing the increase in the price of chicken, which had a cost of 1 point 22 dollars in August compared to the 90 cents it cost four years ago. coupled with the inability of the Castro dictatorship to maintain a stable import of food.
It is worth mentioning that, in October, the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture published a report that shows, with data, the accelerated deterioration that Cuba has had in production, import capacity, quality of life and security. food, with the fall in chicken imports in 2023 being one of the most alarming data.
Meanwhile, Cubans must continue standing in long lines to buy chicken on the island, as long as they can find it, because the product is becoming increasingly scarce.
