Child Organ Donor: Doctors’ Heartfelt Farewell

by Grace Chen

For eleven years, the halls of the John XXIII pediatric hospital in Bari were home to Antonio, and the doctors and nurses became his dearest friends. Today, though he is gone, Antonio’s final wish has been fulfilled: he’s become a “doctor” in his own right, saving lives through the donation of his liver and corneas.

Little Antonio: A Life Defined by Courage

Born with a serious congenital condition, Antonio endured countless surgeries and hospital stays throughout his young life. Even after receiving a kidney transplant from his mother years ago, the illness persisted, largely confining his childhood to hospital rooms and the brief moments he could ride his bicycle or kick a soccer ball—always wearing the jersey of his favorite goalkeeper, Maignan.

A Moving Tribute from His Care Team

The Nephrology, Dialysis and Urology team at the hospital shared a heartfelt letter honoring the “blond with blue eyes” who brought so much joy to the clinic. “He had become ‘one of us’,” the doctors wrote. “Antonio didn’t have the ‘magic’ of a normal life, but when he faced yet another problem he said enough and flew away.”

In a moment of profound grief, Antonio’s family demonstrated extraordinary love by authorizing the donation of his organs. “Antonio, thus, remains with us,” they declared, finding solace in knowing their child would give other young patients the “magic” he was denied.

The Bari Polyclinic’s leadership expressed its deepest sympathy to the family, also extending gratitude to the Regional Transplant Center and the multidisciplinary teams—including anesthesiologists, neurologists, nephrologists, and psychologists—who coordinated the organ retrieval with utmost care.

Though Antonio’s battle with illness has ended, his story lives on through those who now have a renewed chance at life, thanks to the courage of his family and his selfless gift.
