This year’s winners include a prominent author, a hard-working translator and a comic about Afghanistan.

Saša Stanišić is one of the winners of the German Prize for Youth Literature 2024. The prize, donated by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, was awarded in seven categories at the Frankfurt Book Fair and has a total of 72,000 euros.
The children’s book winner was “Wolf” by Saša Stanišić, who won the German Book Prize in 2019 with “Origin”. The book tells of an episode of bullying among young people in a forest camp.
“The author and narrator prove to be keen observers of social issues and address the question of what actually leads to bullying. Despite the seriousness of the topic, the novel impresses with its wordplay,” the jury said.
Take young people seriously
In the children’s books category, Eva Rottmann won with “Kurz vor dem Rand”. The focus of this novel is a skater who lives with her father in a high-rise building. “An exceptional coming-of-age novel that takes youth seriously in all its facets,” said the jury.
“Wünsche,” an escape story from South Vietnam, won best picture book. The winner of the non-fiction prize, the documentary comic “Giochi. On the trail of refugees from Afghanistan”, deals with the theme of migration.
Special price for translators
Translator Rolf Erdorf was awarded the special prize for his complete work. He has translated around 200 children’s and young adult books from Dutch into German. The Special New Talent Award went to Astrid Bührle-Gallet for her translation of the French story “Let the Tigris cry for you”.
The book prize of the youth jury went to Alice Winn’s historical novel “Through the Great Fire”. It tells the secret love story between two friends during the First World War. (dpa)
