The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, inaugurated this Friday in Havana the summit of heads of state and government of the Group G77 y China with a call to a new global financial architecture that takes into account the needs of less favored economies. “The world is failing developing countries“.
The group was created in 1964 by 77 developing countries and expanded to include 134 nations. Asia, Africa y Latin America. The summit takes place a week before the United Nations General Assembly. The Secretary General considered that it is “very important” that developing countries “fight to guarantee the necessary transformations in international systems to create the conditions that allow them to face the challenges.”

The urgency of a new international economic order, on a fairer exchange, and the problem of external debtunderpinned by the governance of the International Monetary Fund (FMI) and the world Bank, are some of the problems that cross the thematic axis of the event in the largest of the Antilles. The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, assured that the final text, the result of “a broad debate,” will be a “progressive, universal scope, with a positive and constructive tone.” Its content, he stressed, will be “loyal to the purposes and principles of the group” and attached “firmly to the claim of the right to development in the midst of an increasingly exclusive and plundering international order.”
Cuban diplomacy has achieved that the draft of the final text, which will be discussed by the delegations, includes the request for the “urgent elimination of international coercive measures”, in reference to the Economic sanctions of USA against the island, which Díaz-Canel also mentioned as causing the serious social situation in his country.
The meeting in Cuba, which received the rotating presidency of the G77 from Pakistan, has the presence of the leaders of Brazil, Argentina, Colombia y Bolivia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Alberto Fernández, Gustavo Petro and Luis Arce, respectively. The president of Angola, João Lourenço, and his colleagues Filipe Nyusi, from Mozambique, also attend; Ranil Wickremesinghe, from Sri Lanka; Thongloun Sisoulith, from Laos and Cyril Ramaphosa, from South Africa, among others.
