The Mecaner staff gathered this Friday in front of the facilities located in Urduliz to denounce the ERE and plant closure projects adopted by the multinational, which would mean the dismissal of 148 people – the company’s 144 workers, plus the four linked to the cleaning subcontractor. During the mobilization, held early in the afternoon, they announced a strike day for the next day the 21st and called on the residents of the region to participate in their struggle. To this end, they have also called a demonstration that will take place in the Bizkaia municipality on October 7.

“We know that this decision has not been made either in Urduliz or in Euskal Herria, it has been taken in the multinational Stellantis to which Mecaner belongs and which is the manufacturer of Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Jeep and many other brands,” denounced the collective in a statement in which they also criticize the explanations given by the company, which they have accused of “greed.” “It prioritizes profits over people’s lives, since the company has made profits in recent years,” they have accused, and have defended that they have the company “in their veins” and that they plan to “fight for it.” ».

In a protest in which, in addition to banners, they displayed coffins to symbolize the death of the company, Mecaner workers have warned that the intention to close the company is not new in a “continuous” context of closure of industrial facilities in the territory. In them they see a common objective of moving production to other areas of the planet with lower costs, where workers are exploited. “This fact is causing the weight of the industry in Euskal Herria to become less and less and we are becoming a country of tourism and services,” they condemned.

Basque institutions

Both the works council and the entire workforce have criticized the decisions taken and have demanded that the multinational Stellantis rectify its decision to close the plant and meet with the works council “urgently” to agree on alternatives. They have also called on the Basque Government and the Bizkaia Provincial Council to assume their responsibility of getting involved in the search for a formula that will save the 148 jobs. “Basque institutions cannot allow the continued closure and relocation of companies and the destruction of jobs,” they claimed.
