A nationwide drought warning has been issued in China as extreme heat is predicted to continue in southwest China until September. A red alert has been issued for the 10th consecutive day due to extreme heat in China. A red alert is the highest alert in the country’s 4-tier weather warning system.

Due to this unprecedented heat, the Yangtze River, Asia’s largest river in China’s Hubei Province, has dried up. According to the China National Meteorological Center in Beijing, it has been extremely hot since June 13. Prior to this, last year in 2013, there was a heat wave in China for 62 consecutive days. But now there is more than that heat wave for 64 consecutive days.

China’s hydropower generation capacity has been severely affected by this drought. Hydropower generation in Sichuan Province has been severely affected as the flow of major rivers is reduced by 20 to 50%. Daily hydropower generation has now declined by 51% to 440 million kilowatts from 900 million kilowatts earlier.

66 rivers in 34 provinces in southwest China have dried up. South China’s rainfall is 60% below normal. The drought is expected to worsen over the next 10 days in most parts of the Yangtze River Basin due to continued high temperatures and lack of rain.

Economists are concerned about the impact of this drought, as 75% of China’s total grain production is obtained during the autumn harvest.
