Beijing: The 20th Party Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is starting today. Xi Jinping is expected to retain his power as president for the third consecutive term. In 2018, the two-term rule was abolished for Xi Jinping. For this reason, the 69-year-old is facing the prospect of remaining in power for life.

Xi Jinping, who is also known as the Supreme Leader in China, currently holds three positions. General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China, and President of the People’s Republic of China. Xi may retain the first two positions in today’s party congress. Xi is expected to be re-elected as president at the National People’s Congress annual session in 2023. Xi Jinping has been the General Secretary of the Chinese Party Congress since 2012 and the President of China since 2013. In 2021, the Chinese Communist Party declared Xi a ‘Historical Personality’, placing him on a par with Mao Zedong and Deng Zao Ping.

The achievements of Xi’s administration in the last two terms are that he has eradicated corruption, eradicated poverty, and led China to technological progress. The Xi side applauds Xi’s tremendous insight and determination in dealing with Covid. Even as the whole world has eased the covid restrictions and people’s lives are starting to return to normal, in China due to Xi Jinping’s zero covid policy, severe lock downs, mass testing and quarantine restrictions continue. Xi Jinping’s military drills in response to the visit of American diplomat Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan have ignited major diplomatic tensions in the region. It was also during Xi’s time that the Chinese troops had very hostile behavior towards the Indian Border Guard along the Ladakh border.

Under Xi Jinping’s rule over the past decade, the Chinese Communist Party has grown to become a critical influence in the lives of China’s 1.4 billion people. The party and Xi have maintained sovereignty by strengthening government systems and cracking down on critics and private stings. Ahead of this party congress, there are also allegations that Xi Jinping purged many of his party enemies from the public sphere in the name of anti-corruption measures. Political observers speculate that in the coming years, even the constitution of the party may be thoroughly revised in line with the ‘Xi Jin Ping Thought’. They also believe that with Xi Jinping getting a third term at this congress, China will move towards a totalitarian regime similar to that of Mao.
