Rollator-Wielding Senior Suspected in Berlin Christmas Market Burglaries
A brazen thief, utilizing a mobility scooter as apparent cover, is suspected of multiple burglaries at a Christmas market in Berlin, causing an estimated €70,000 to €80,000 in damages. The suspect repeatedly targeted stalls at the Loretta am Wannsee beer garden market, stealing cash, electronics, and even an entire mulled wine dispensing system.
The unusual crime spree began last week, with the individual initially appearing to authorities as a disoriented late-night pedestrian. However, surveillance footage revealed a calculated pattern of break-ins occurring in the early morning hours.
Three Separate Incidents Disrupt Holiday Cheer
The first incident occurred on Thursday morning around 4:00 AM, when the suspect allegedly broke into a winter garden structure and stole a master key set. This allowed access to cash registers and various electronic devices, according to a senior event official. The suspect then abandoned his rollator – a mobility aid resembling a walker – to facilitate entry into the market stalls.
Undeterred, the suspect returned on Sunday and again on Tuesday, escalating the scope of the thefts. In addition to continued theft of cash and mobile phones, the perpetrator reportedly smashed windows, forced open an office, and damaged a refrigeration unit. A complete Glühwein (mulled wine) dispensing system was also stolen.
“He always locked the doors behind him with the key,” the event official stated, highlighting the suspect’s apparent familiarity with security procedures.
Increased Security Measures Following Burglaries
The repeated intrusions have prompted a heightened security response. Several market vendors are now spending nights on the premises, and all locks have been replaced with a new alarm system installed. Multiple reports have been filed with the Berlin police.
“I have been planning for months to turn the beer garden into a Christmas market – and then something like this happens,” expressed the event manager. “We have repaired everything immediately, and the Christmas market can continue.”
One vendor, Bastian Pirschel, who operates a grill stall, voiced concerns, stating, “We all hope he doesn’t come back.”
The Loretta Christmas Market at Wannsee remains open to the public through December 30th. Authorities continue to investigate the incidents and search for the suspect, leaving open the question of whether the rollator was merely a disguise or an integral part of the criminal’s plan.
