A free update and new DLC are on the horizon for Civilization 7, alongside a meaningful shift in advancement ideology that will allow players to guide a single civilization throughout the entirety of a game – a feature highly requested by the community.
After a launch met with mixed reception, especially regarding its “Age” system, developer Firaxis is responding to player feedback with sweeping changes. The studio is currently internally playtesting the ability to play as one civilization continuously through all eras, offering a more customary Civilization experience. “We want to open up the game and provide many new paths your empire can follow while achieving greatness and competing for victory,” a senior official stated in a recent post on the Civblog.
This commitment to player input extends to a new community testing initiative, the Firaxis Feature Workshop, where a select group of players will gain early access to work-in-progress features. Details on how to apply will be released in the coming months, with interested players encouraged to join the official Discord for updates.
Update 1.3.0: Nautical Warfare and New Civilizations
Arriving the week of November 3rd, civilization 7 update 1.3.0 will focus heavily on naval gameplay, coinciding with the release of the “Tides of Power” DLC – offered free to existing owners of the 4X strategy game during the holiday season. The update introduces new naval units, buildings, and terrain features, fundamentally altering ocean-based strategy.
The update will introduce the Harbor, a new building available to all civilizations, functioning as a naval unit production hub and boosting fishing yields. Accompanying this is the Privateer,a new naval unit unlocked in the Exploration Age,capable of raiding enemy trade routes and military units even without a formal declaration of war.
Beyond units and buildings, the ocean itself will become more dynamic. Players will encounter new resources like crabs, turtles, and cowrie, alongside the land-based pitch resource. New terrain features, including atolls (movement-blocking obstacles in deep ocean) and lotus terrain (providing food and gold bonuses in lakes), will add strategic depth. Notably, Hawaii will gain the unique ability to work ocean tiles during the Exploration Age, while all civilizations will be able to do so in the Modern era.
Civilization 7’s naval combat is also undergoing a significant overhaul. Existing naval units will be divided into light and heavy classes. Light units excel in melee combat, boasting superior movement and vision, and the ability to flank enemies. heavy units, conversely, are ranged attackers with slower movement and reduced visibility. “The optimal Civ 7 admiral will use lights and heavies in tandem,” one analyst noted, suggesting a need for tactical fleet composition.
tides of Power DLC: Pirates and New Leaders
The “Tides of power” DLC will be released in two parts. The first, launching alongside update 1.3.0, will introduce the infamous pirate leader Edward Teach (blackbeard), alongside the new civilizations of Tonga and the republic of pirates. The second part, arriving in december, will feature Moroccan pirate leader Sayyida al Hurra, and also the civilizations of the Ottomans and Iceland.
Firaxis acknowledges the challenges faced since Civilization 7’s launch and appears committed to addressing player concerns. The studio also recently highlighted ongoing work to overhaul the game’s map generator, further demonstrating a dedication to improving the overall player experience. While the road to recovery might potentially be long, these updates signal a positive trajectory for the future of Civilization 7.
