Climate change, Greenpeace mission on the Lys glacier – Science and Technology

by times news cr

(ANSA) – AOSTA, 10 OCT – The technicians of Greenpeace Italia, together with the Italian Glaciological Committee and the University of Milan, will be on the Lys glacier, in the Monte Rosa group, on 11 and 12 October to study the impacts of climate change and to investigate the health of its melt waters. “Due to the climate crisis – we read in a note – from the early 19th century to today the glacier has reduced in length by almost 2 kilometers and its valley tongue has separated from the upper glacial basins, creating three-four glacial bodies no longer connected. More and more debris covers the surface of the glacier, which has seen a loss of several tens of meters of thickness and the formation of ephemeral lakes in deglacialized areas.”
The expedition will also serve to study, through photographic documentation, the effects of the changing climate and sampling will be carried out on the melt waters downstream of the glacier to identify the presence of possible residues of Pfas (poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances) and of pesticides, “demonstrating how pollution and intensive agriculture can have impacts even at high altitudes”.
“Global warming and the impacts of human activities threaten the survival of our white giants and put not only environmental, but also economic and social balances at risk”, declares Simona Savini of Greenpeace Italia. The planned activities are part of the “Until the last drop” project promoted by Greenpeace Italia to push public and private institutions and entities to act to protect Italian water resources, which are increasingly at risk.
