Closure of a lane at km 11.5 of CAES from October 7 to 20, 2024
The Road Conservation Execution Unit —COVIAL— announced last Friday, October 4, the temporary closure of one of the lanes towards Guatemala Cityin it km 11.5 of the CA-1 Oriente, Highway to El Salvador. This closure is part of the work for the construction of the first bridge in the area, which involves the drilling of eight retaining piles, so more work space is needed.
According to the COVIAL statement, the closure of a lane at km 11.5 of CAES It will take place between Monday, October 7 and 20, at night, from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, and will affect only one of the two downhill lanes that connect the East of the country with the City of Guatemala. It should be noted that the uphill lanes, from the capital city to the Highway to El Salvador, will remain enabled, so there will be no interruptions in that direction of traffic.
The Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) from Santa Catarina Pinulaalong with the General Directorate of Road Protection and Safety —PROVIAL—will be in charge of traffic regulation during closures, seeking to minimize inconveniences for motorists.
Due to this closure, it is important that drivers plan their routes in advance, taking into account that only one lane will be enabled for vehicles heading towards Guatemala City.
What work is being done in the area?
The affected section in the km 11.5 of the Road to El Salvador It has been the subject of repairs since 2022, after cracks and collapses were recorded in the road, caused by the collapse of a water collector. This damage was caused by the saturation of the soil due to the heavy rains of the season, which affected vehicular circulation.
To mitigate these problems, temporary measures have been implemented, such as covering slopes and placing piles, while the definitive works progress. In addition, temporary lanes were enabled to maintain traffic flow, which has allowed drivers to continue using the road while the structural interventions are carried out.
One of the main projects is the construction of two bridges in the area. In a previous closure, carried out in early September, 10 concrete beams measuring 25 meters in length were installed, as well as a pre-slab as part of the first bridge, which will have a total length of 75 meters.
The current closure, which will last until October 20, is necessary to continue drilling and placing the retaining piles that will support the bridge structure.
