CNE investigates Petro for campaign expenses

The electoral authority of Colombia (CNE) opened an investigation against the Colombian president Gustavo Petro for allegedly violating spending limits during his 2022 campaign.

He National Electoral Council accuses Petro and his team for not having declared more than 925 thousand dollars in expenses, including contributions from unions and payments to electoral witnesses.

Although Petro only faces fines, experts warn that the investigation could be sent to the House of Representativeswhich would open the door to impeachment.

Among those investigated are Ricardo Roa, former campaign manager and current head of Ecopetrol, and other leaders of left. Also leaders of Colombia Humana and Patriotic Union, main left-wing political movements.

Petro denounced that it was an attempted “coup d’état” and called for protests, while insisting that the CNE acts under the influence of opposition parties.

Suspicions in Colombia increased after his son’s confessions, Nicolas Petro, about contributions from a drug trafficker to the campaign.
