Thiruvananthapuram: After the incident where a nurse died due to food poisoning from a hotel in Kottayam, the food safety department conducted a state-wide inspection. 11 hotels were closed in Thiruvananthapuram district. Hotels including Buhari Hotel in Attakulangara were closed. 46 hotels were inspected. The capital also has the highest number of checked hotels in the state.
Officials said Buhari was locked up because cockroaches were found in food items. After receiving the complaint, when the officials went to inspect, they found cockroaches in the old fridge in the kitchen. A useless fridge was being used instead of a cupboard. Officials also instructed to change the wet sacks spread in the kitchen. Officials directed Buhari’s owners to open the hotel with the corporation’s approval after obtaining a pesticide control certificate.

However, the hotel owner and staff protested alleging sabotage during the inspection. They said the officials could not seize the stale food from the hotel and demanded that the nearby hotels be checked. Officials accused the staff and owners of trying to stop those who came for inspection at the Buhari Hotel.
However, the owners alleged that the hotel was closed on purpose. She also alleged that the officials kept the cockroach in the plastic cover in the fridge which was not used in the hotel and then took the photo. She said that the food safety department is checking here once in two weeks. The fort police reached the spot after coming to know about the incident. The officials directed the police to ensure that the hotel is opened in accordance with the norms.
