The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a large ship, according to video obtained by CNN.
Local agencies received 911 calls around 1:30 a.m. ET reporting that a ship, traveling from Baltimore, had struck a column on the bridge, Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the bridge, told AP. Baltimore Fire Department.
“This is an extreme emergency,” he said. “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people,” Cartwright told the outlet. The official called the collapse an “developing event with mass casualties.”
Cartwright said there appears to be “some cargo or restraints hanging off the bridge,” making conditions unsafe and unstable for first responders operating cautiously.
