Speculation about the possible death of the guerrilla leader arose after Colombia’s High Commissioner for Peace, Otty Patiño, pointed out in recent days that Márquez could have died in Venezuela after undergoing surgery.. Patiño clarified that, despite the investigations carried out through different means, it has not been possible to obtain official confirmation of this fact.
Márquez, who was one of the main negotiators in the 2016 peace process between the Colombian Government and the extinct FARC, broke with said agreement in 2019, announcing the creation of the Second Marquetalia, an armed dissident that has operated mainly in the areas borders between Colombia and Venezuela. Since his separation from the peace process, his whereabouts have been the subject of speculation, with recurring reports that he was taking refuge in Venezuelan territory.
The Colombian authorities maintain an open investigation and surveillance of Márquez’s situation, whose influence continues to be relevant in the context of the armed conflict and the search for peace in the country.
