The quality and safety of Colombian eggs transcends borders and starting today at 11:00 pm, two 40-foot containers will leave for Cuba, which means 17,280 trays of 30 units, for a total of 518,400 eggs. During this year, the poultry sector expects to export this amount on a monthly basis.

For more than a decade, producers have been working to take chicken and eggs to new frontiers. The work carried out together with the Colombian Agricultural Institute – ICA, is essential to achieve health admissibility that allows the opening of international markets.

“As a country, we are very proud to have achieved this important milestone, this first export of eggs to Cuba is a testimony to the commitment of our producers to health, safety and quality, allowing our products to reach more international markets; “We are sure that our high-quality fresh eggs will be well received by consumers on the island,” said Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, general manager of ICA.

Reaching this stage is a consequence of investing in the country’s health status and production capacity in a sustainable manner.

The manager added that biosafety, understood as a management and prevention tool, has allowed Colombia to maintain the status of a self-declared country free of avian influenza since 2010 and of high virulence Newcastle disease since 2021.

For his part, Gonzalo Moreno, executive president of Fenavi, indicated that “last year we had the opportunity to participate in the largest food fair in Cuba, Fihav, with the help of Procolombia and the ICA; in which not only trade agreements were consolidated, but health agreements were defined between the ICA and Cenasa, the Cuban health authority, to achieve effective admissibility for shell eggs.”

It is also the consequence of the commitment to sustainability, a term rooted in Colombian poultry farming for more than 25 years of union work in different research projects on environmental, social and economic issues. “Two years ago we launched the Poultry Sustainability Seal, unique in the world, as a result of comprehensive work to make visible and promote sustainable practices in the poultry sector,” emphasized Gonzalo Moreno, Executive President of Fenavi.

Production at a good pace

In this regard, it is important to highlight that in 1995 a Colombian consumed 149 eggs, today he enjoys 315 units. During that same time period, production went from 5 billion units to more than 16 billion. Colombia’s poultry production capacity allows it to supply domestic consumption and initiate this export process.

In terms of egg production, Colombia usually occupies a relevant position worldwide, generally being among the first 15 countries.
