In this mission, in addition to the ICRC, the UN Verification Mission, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Catholic Church, the Cauca Emergencies and Emergencies Regulatory Center (CRUE), Ombudsman and the Integration Committee of the Colombian Massif participated.

This person was transferred by the Ombudsman’s Office to an area in the department of Nariño to be reunited with his loved ones.

“The parties to the conflict must protect the life and dignity of people who do not participate or who have ceased to participate in hostilities and must treat them with humanity in all circumstances. In this context, we highlight the relevance of the surrender of this person” said Kian Abbassian, head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Cali.

The ICRC reminds bearers of weapons to respect their neutral humanitarian work. Access to the areas most affected by armed conflicts is essential for the organization to help the populations that suffer the most from this reality.

“Our access to the areas most affected by armed conflicts is fundamental so that we can help, impartially and independently, the people who suffer from this reality. We will continue to accompany the affected communities and we will continue to dialogue with all the armed actors to sensitize them about the humanitarian consequences that armed conflicts continue to produce,” Abbassian added.

So far this year, the ICRC has facilitated the release of 37 people and reiterates its willingness to participate in this type of humanitarian operation.
