The moon went under the water and surfaced

Street art objects have an amazing life, because nature at any moment can “finish” their image, filling it with new meanings. This happened with the installation by Leonid Tishkov, which was installed last fall on the pond of the Malevich park near Moscow. Due to recent downpours, a boat carrying a luminous moon-shaped light box has sunk into the water. And the “Private Moon” itself partially sank into the pond and, together with the reflection, began to resemble a seagull. But don’t worry, the moon is already being rescued.

“Due to heavy rains, the water level in the pond rose, and the drain became clogged,” says artist Leonid Tishkov, the author of the “Private Moon” installation. – Therefore, the boat was under water and the moon also went a little into the pond. But nothing, she is already being rescued.

— How is the installation fixed on the pond? Do I understand correctly that the boat is not at anchor, but on a fixed metal structure, so it cannot move?

– Yes. At the bottom there is a metal platform on which the boat is fixed. That is, she is always at the same level and cannot swim away.

– This natural “finishing” has its own charm. Something similar happens all the time with Alexander Matrosov’s art object “Happiness is not far off” in Perm: Kama either floods the inscription, or opens it again, which is why the text reflected in the water all the time sounds new. How do you interpret the incident with the moon?

– A person is too busy thinking that he can rule the world. But in fact, nature, as it was stronger than man, remains so. I think it’s great that Luna has her own life and her own adventures. I watch them. They send me fabulous pictures.

The artist calmly and even enthusiastically reacted to the consequences of the elements, which became his co-author and changed the look of the installation. In addition, “Private Moon” was originally conceived as a narrative visual poem. 20 years ago, Leonid Tishkov inspired the creation of a series about “Private Moon” by Rene Magritte’s painting “September 16”, where the month is depicted hanging on the crown of a tree, like a toy. The work of the surrealist is symbolic and mysterious, it creates the effect of “hidden visible”.

Since then, Tishkov has not only created several dozen installations in different parts of the globe, where the main character is the Moon, but also dedicated a poem to her. The plot is as follows: once the Moon descended from heaven to the artist’s attic, she fell ill, and he cured her, after that they went on an exciting journey around the world. Each date with the Moon is a romantic story about the Master and his Muse – his personal Moon, which in the darkest times shows the way to the light. This is a visual poem about love, about the unknowability of the world, about the power of nature. “The moon overcomes our loneliness in the universe, uniting many around it,” wrote Leonid Tishkov back in 2003, when he had just come up with his visual poem, which subsequently won the hearts of millions of viewers. The last story about the Moon, which arose by the will of nature, became another page of this romantic story.
