What is really important? What touches us today – and will not go away tomorrow? It’s the things that have moved us since human existence: happiness, love, family, partnership, time, stress, loneliness, farewell, grief.

BILD columnist Louis Hagen*, coming from a German-Jewish family, sought answers to the eternal questions of mankind from poets, thinkers and researchers. And found a few answers that are amazingly simple – and yet can enrich our lives.

If someone wants to show you a photo and looks for it on their smartphone, they often lose themselves in an unmanageable world of images – a swarm of hundreds, even thousands of photos.

The whole world in one hand. At some point it will be there – the one photo that matters.

Now I dare to make a bold thesis: cell phone cameras, Leica, disposable devices, Polaroids: the photos we have saved or printed out have never been the right ones. It doesn’t matter whether we glued them in or whether they are in the slide cases in the basement. These are just snapshots of our lives, frozen scenes, that’s all: That’s how it was back then, we explain.

But was it? Wasn’t it often quite different, wasn’t it much more? What I want to say: people from past decades have often looked embarrassed and sad into cameras. Today in the smartphone age, self-presentation has become commonplace.

Somehow most of them are like influencers of themselves. Smiling is part of it. Hardly anyone is still camera shy like generations before us. (Who goes to a studio to have their picture taken anymore?)

Today all scenes of life are laughed away as if we were always happy. Somehow beautiful, but often just a nice appearance, I think.

Our most beautiful pictures are not in the smartphone. You are in our hearts.
